The antique carousel was built in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1932. Other attractions include go-carts, bumper cars and the Express Himalaya.

Myrtle Waves – 3000 10th N. Ext. in Myrtle Beach – 20 acres of water rides and slides. The Carolinas’ largest water park is also the tallest; Turbo Twisters is a 10-story, lightening-fast ride. With 30 rides and attractions, Myrtle Waves is proudly staffed by professionally certified lifeguards. The just-for-children Tadpool, only 18 inches deep, includes a Little Dipper Slide and the Magic Mushroom water fountain.

South Carolina Aquarium – The South Carolina Aquarium on Charleston Harbor depicts the rich variety of life that exists in the aquatic environments of South Carolina. The Aquarium brings together over 10,000 animals and 5,000 live plants normally separated by hundreds of miles in the wild. Journey from the Mountain to Sea, and learn how these environments, no matter how different, are mutually interdependent. River otters, snakes, fish, turtles, alligators, and birds, all in their natural habitats will be found under one roof. The South Carolina Aquarium offers the perfect balance between conservation, education, and entertainment.

Waccatee Zoological Farm – 8500 Enterprise Road, Myrtle Beach – The Waccatee Zoological Farm began approximately 20 years ago as a private collection of exotic and domestic animals. Including a herd of miniature horses and deer; a variety of big cats such as a black leopard, a lion, cougars and tigers; a long-necked llama; ostriches; a rainbow of exotic birds; and a menagerie of monkeys, the Waccatee Zoo is a wonderful off-the-beaten-path treat for the family. The zoo also has a petting area that is ideal for introducing small children to animals.

Getting There

The popularity of the Grand Strand has soared, with an estimated 12 million visitors pouring in every year. It is easy to avoid traffic snarls if you travel at the right times of day and night. Plan your trip so that you will be driving U.S. Highway 501 into Myrtle Beach before 7 AM or after 7 PM Monday through Thursday, or in the middle of the day. Another rule of thumb is to stay off beach exit roads right after hotel checkout time on Saturdays and Sundays. You will be much better off to check out of your room, put the bags in the car and plan to spend time in town or on the beach until late afternoon.

An excellent highway system has recently been completed providing easy access from all directions and within the area.

If you’re coming to the Grand Strand from eastern North Carolina, try Interstate 40 east or U.S. Highway 17 south to Wilmington, North Carolina. At Wilmington, head southbound on U.S. 17. Avoid rush hours.

From Charleston, take U.S. 17 north. It could be crowded at peak traffic times.

If you’re traveling north on Interstate 95, take Exit 170 (clearly marked “Myrtle Beach”), near Florence. Take U.S. Highway 76 to U.S. 501 and follow it the rest of the way. Vacationers heading to North Strand beaches — Little River, Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive, Atlantic Beach and Windy Hill — should veer to the left at Marion, cross two lanes of U.S. 501 and continue on U.S. 76. At Nichols, take a right onto S.C. Highway 9.

If you’re traveling Interstate 20, follow the signs toward Florence. The road will merge into I-95 north and bypass Florence. Then take Exit 170, same as if you’d come the whole way on I-95.

If you’re traveling south on I-95, take Exit 193 at Dillon. Head toward Latta, then take U.S. 501. If you’re going to North Myrtle Beach, you can take S.C. 9 all the way from Dillon.

Hardeeville is a small southern town with the distinction of being at a major travel crossroads… I-95 and US 17. More than just another of the hundreds of nondescript exits, Hardeeville is home to nearly 1200 motel rooms and dozens of restaurants. It’s also a central location when visiting Carolina’s “Low Country”.

Places to Stay

As one of the major I-95 interchanges, exit 5 is literally a lodging paradise! Here is only a partial list of the motels here: Budget Inn, Carolina Inn Express, Comfort Inn, Days Inn, Economy Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Howard Johnson, Knights Inn, Magnolia Motel, Masters Inn, Red Carpet Inn, and Super 8. If you’re an RV’er, there’s camping nearby too! The Gateway Campground is easy to get to from I-95 exit 8.

Places to Eat

If seafood is your weakness, try Cap’n Bill’s. For great steaks check out Gene’s at the Budget Inn. I-95, Exit 5 also has dozens of fast foods too! Burger King, Denny’s, KFC, McDonald’s, Shoney’s, Subway, Wendy’s and the Waffle House are just a few. I personally recommend Shoney’s… they have reasonably priced meals and something for everyone!

Places to Go

There are a number of excellent golf courses nearby including Whispering Pines. Shopping is also plentiful here. Bargain hunt at the Hardeeville Factory Outlet Mall, located right at the exit. There’s also a tourist info center here too!

Getting Around

Everythings right at exit 5… both east and west. What could be easier? Exit 8, just 3 miles north on I-95 is expected to grow commercially as well.

East Brunswick is a medium-sized town of 25 square miles and a population of about 50,000 people. The northern part is home to Tower Center-twin 25-story towers visible from the Empire State Building. The main highway that runs through the heart of the state,Route 18, has it’s large stretch of commercial centers and diners in East Brunswick. The town’s school system is nationally recognized as an educational standard with its 8 Blue-Ribbon schools. Other attractions are the Brunswick Square Mall and the various farms in the picturesque rural section to the south, with berry and pumpkin picking at Giamarese Farm, as well as the wide selection at the many garden centers on Cranbury Road.

Places to Stay

Now down to the nitty-gritty. Topping the list of places to stay is the Hilton, sandwiched between the “twin towers”. It is visible for miles down the turnpike and is conveinient for business travellers, as well as whenever any politicians are staying in the area. A Holiday Inn, as mentioned in the 2001 edition, will be completed soon and sits close to the towers near the turnpike. Going down a notch, there are familiar chains such as the Motel 6, (which has just added an extended-stay building)Macintosh Inn, and the Ramada Inn. I have been to all of these and found them suitable. As far as food at these establishments are concerned, I have had Easter brunch at the Ramada’s downstairs restaurant and found the service and price reasonable. The Hilton is home to the annual high school prom here, and the food is unbelievable. If you don’t believe me, call the White House.

Places to Eat

From low to high, there are the little strip mall diners that I don’t recommend, that is unless you have a lot of Maalox on hand. There are McDonalds, Miami Subs, Baja Fresh, Wendy’s, Burger King, Denny’s, Roy Rogers, Olive Garden, Chili’s, Chi-Chi’s, Ruby Tuesday’s, Red Lobster, and Applebee’s are all great familiar eateries. Personally, both the Colonial and Seville Diners are great but I prefer the Colonial for selection and price. Very good coffee for the early morning start-ups. The Tomato Factory on Ryder’s Lane is very good but call ahead for seating as theres always a wait. Finally, The Blue Water Seafood Company is a small, elegant, restaurant near the GMC dealership that has the finest seafood in the area. Make sure to come with enough cash and without the kids. There is also the Chateau, but that is on Cranbury Road and is the kind of place you would have your wedding at (not for a little dinner).

Places to Go

This is probably where East Brunswick falls short. Entertainment is few and far between for a town this size, but we manage. The movie theater in the mall has 20+ screens, and is a favorite hangout of the high school crowd on Friday nights. There’s a bunch of tanning salons, some arcades, an indoor sports place called Sports N’ Stuff, and thats about it.

Getting Around

If you enter town from the turnpike by the towers and the big East brunswick sign, the traffic will bottleneck over the bridge because you lose a lane at the footbridge. If that happens, you can go turn right at Eggers Street at the footbridge traffic light and follow down until you see the east brunswick racquet club on the left of the road. Follow that down to the Toys R Us-then u should be in a parking lot with a Shopper’s World-then you can see Route 18 from there and go back on or continue on the back road near the Mr.Pizza and follow straight past the junior high on your right until you see a cream & red warehouse at the end of the road with a light and apartments on your right. Left takes you to 18, right takes you to Ryder’s Lane and the Acme Shopping Center. This is probably the best advice to give you if you come in during rush hour. Also, for local news turn to 1450 am and 98.3 fm.

Located on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal which connects the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, this historic town offers great shopping, fine dining and elegant B&B’s in a quaint, victorian setting.

The town is “split in half” by the canal, which is not only used by commercial shipping vessels heading to and from the port of Baltimore, but also pleasure craft touring the bay. The Chesapeake City Bridge, which spans the canal and joins the two halves of the city, is tall enough for merchant vessels to pass beneath. Shipwatching is a fun passtime here.

Places to Stay

Chesapeake City has several extremely nice Bed and Breakfasts on both the South and North sides of town. Each one has a different “flavor”, and all are top rate–with friendly innkeepers and lovely surroundings.

Places to Eat

Chesapeake City boasts several wonderful restaurants for seafood lovers (and landlubbers alike). On the south side, The Bayard House, The Chesapeake Inn, and The Yacht Club all boast first rate fare for lunch and dinner. Also for those who love Maryland Crabs and beer, the Tap Room on the south side fits the bill. Breakfast, light lunch and dinner are also available at the Bohemia Cafe, housed in what used to be the Chesapeake City Post Office many years ago. Be sure to ask for Wernie’s Austrian specialties!

Places to Go

The C&D Canal Museum houses the huge waterwheel and engines which ran the old loch system on the canal in the last century.
Several quaint shops are tucked in the historic district of the south side, including art galleries, collectible and antique shops. Most of the town’s buildings on the south side are on the Maryland Historic Register, dating to the early-mid 1800’s. The quaint homes and businesses are period maintained, with signs on the houses listing dates and names of historic owners. Printed tourist guides are available in all the shops.
This area of Cecil County is noted for its beautiful, rural scenery and lovely thoroughbred farms. Bring your bicycles and cameras! Other historic towns are sprinkled within driving distance, as well as several marinas for access to the freshwater rivers on the upper bay.

Getting Around

Chesapeake City can be reached easily from I-95 using the Elkton exit to Route 40, then south on Rt 213. Look for exit signs approaching and after crossing the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal bridge. Signs point the way into town. On the south side, George Street and Bohemia Avenue run parallel to the bridge, ending at the canal. All businesses and restaurants on the south side are accessed from these streets. Parking is limited due to the historic nature of the streets, but there is parking under the bridge a short walk from anywhere, and the stroll is a very pleasant one. On weekends, catch a ride on one of our horse drawn carriages to and from the parking areas.

As with most of this area of Virginia, Petersburg is rich in early American history. There are historic districts, Civil War sites, museums and other attractions here that will fill even the busiest schedule. Petersburg also has an abundance of accommodations, restaurants and shopping… making it a great place to spend some vacation time.

Places to Stay

I-95 exit 52 is Petersburg’s primary commercial location. Best Western, EconoLodge, Holiday Inn, Howard Johnson, Knights Inn, Petersburg Motor Inn, Ramada, Super 8, and others are located just a short distance from this exit.

Places to Eat

The Siege Museum (West Bank Street) is a Civil War exhibit and includes a very fine film presentation. The Petersburg National Battlefield (I-95 exit 54) is a 2,700 acre park with a Visitor’s Center, exhibits, tours and film presentations. If shopping is more to your liking, visit the Southpark Mall located a short distance from I-95 exit 54.
