As with most of this area of Virginia, Petersburg is rich in early American history. There are historic districts, Civil War sites, museums and other attractions here that will fill even the busiest schedule. Petersburg also has an abundance of accommodations, restaurants and shopping… making it a great place to spend some vacation time.
Places to Stay
I-95 exit 52 is Petersburg’s primary commercial location. Best Western, EconoLodge, Holiday Inn, Howard Johnson, Knights Inn, Petersburg Motor Inn, Ramada, Super 8, and others are located just a short distance from this exit.
Places to Eat
A good selection of restaurants are concentrated around the I-95 exit 52 area. Aunt Sarah’s Pancake House, Dairy Queen, Howard Johnson and others are located here. I-95 exit 54 also has a number of restaurants including Applebee’s, Chi-Chi’s, McDonald’s and Subway.
Places to Go
Take a self-guided tour of Petersburg and the Old Towne Historic District. Maps are available at the Visitor’s Center in Old Market Square. The Siege Museum (West Bank Street) is a Civil War exhibit and includes a very fine film presentation. The Petersburg National Battlefield (I-95 exit 54) is a 2,700 acre park with a Visitor’s Center, exhibits, tours and film presentations. If shopping is more to your liking, visit the Southpark Mall located a short distance from I-95 exit 54.
Getting Around
I-95 runs north-south through the center of Petersburg. Exits 54 thru 46 will get you to various locations within the city. I-295 runs to the east of Petersburg and joins I-95 just to the south of the city. I-85 begins in Petersburg (at I-95 exit 68) and travels southwest into North Carolina.
